The main problem is explained here: http://www.eileenslounge.com/viewtopic.php?p=288546#p288546

Here a bit of info about the “working” and not working XP machines

“WorkingWPA”

So it looks like Service pack 2 don’t work.

WPA or WPA2
It’s all to do with some secret coding / encryption. As time went on they got it more safer / more sophisticated,
I expect when you send stuff across the air with the WLAN, then you want to try and prevent people tapping into you
The older XP don’t know about the newer WPA2
I did have a quick fiddle with various security settings on my computers, but that mostly just got me in a mess. But I did not really look at that in any great detail.

My older router had written on the back WPA/WPA2 . The simple short term solution to my problem seemed to mainly to be changing something in the routers settings:

My older router had written on the back WPA/WPA2 . The simple short term solution to my problem seemed to mainly to be changing something in the routers settings:

The default original settings were

https://i.postimg.cc/56MNrxmM/fritz-box-changed-back-to-normal-Ubersicht.jpg (https://postimg.cc/56MNrxmM)

This change was the main thing to cure the problem;
https://i.postimg.cc/MvbK2hsf/fritz-box-change-to-WPA-WPA2.jpg (https://postimg.cc/MvbK2hsf)
https://i.postimg.cc/JsprtjC1/fritz-box-change-to-WPA-WPA2.jpg (https://postimg.cc/JsprtjC1)
https://i.postimg.cc/4Yf4JBML/fritz-box-changed-to-WPA-WPA2-Ubersicht.jpg (https://postimg.cc/4Yf4JBML)

I think that cured the problem, but there was still a bit to do. The error was still there. I am guessing that the earlier software simply is not expecting a 20 character string, possibly it’s expecting up to 16.
Changing the number to 16 characters and almost immediately all was well, all XP machines are happy with the WLAN from the new FRITZ!Box router

The XP machines are happy with that total fix. It’s as simple as this: with a 16 digit code and router set to WPA2(CCMP) then the offence taking XP wont get internet via WLAN. Change the router to WPA + WPA2 , hit the refresh , and internet springs into life.
All other computers seem to be unaffected by switching back and forth in the router settings between WPA + WPA2 and WPA2(CCMP) .
Switching the router from WPA + WPA2 to WPA2(CCMP) causes the internet to fail on the offending XP

There was a few niggles after the change from a 20 to 16 digit password/ code
XP was mostly no problem. Anything like
refresh
or
restart
or
Deactivating and Reactivating the WLAN thing in Control panel Netzwerkverbindungen
Or
Anything similar usually resulted in the XP machine asking for the password/ code.

Windows 7 and Vista gave me some problems initially. They seemed to be stuck with the old 20 digit password and did not seem to want to offer me the chance to update it , or simple re give it after a restart or refresh. I found a way to somehow get it to change or want to ask for the new code. Something similar also seemed available in XP
The start point is to get at a list , one way or another , of available wireless connections currently “in the air” near you. Sometimes you may get offered that somewhere in the lower ribbon, towards the right, if you click on some symbol representing a wireless or aerial or antenna or similar. Another way is to navigate around Control panel / Systemsteurung
It seems to be a bit hap hazard how / when / if you can get at such a list, so I will add a few screenshots of how I have found it

Vista

Windows 7
https://i.postimg.cc/26R0rCkQ/Win7-right-Click-on-avlable-WLANs.jpg

Once you get at a small menu from right clicking which has Properties in it, then click on the Properties and you will have a chance to write in the password/code. ( Sometimes if a number is already there, it may be an indication of it being stuck with a number).

https://i.postimg.cc/SRpgGg0W/get-to-right-click-properties-and-change-number.jpg

Windows 10 was a bit different. As you often find, when trying to navigate around using the control panel, Properties and other old Windows explorer type ways, ( https://i.postimg.cc/7P0P99Jb/right-Click-properites-from-WLAN-available-list-then-extra.jpg https://i.postimg.cc/6qJWw2g9/right-Click-properites-from-WLAN-available-list.jpg https://i.postimg.cc/qqsk7BH2/right-Click-properites-from-WLAN-available-list-then-extra-then-properties.jpg ) you sometimes seem to get intercepted by the new blue background poxy new stuff

But I did not need to find a way to get at a change in the code/password: Somehow it always knew when I had changed anything. ( So I always was offerd the chance to give a new password/code). Strange and unnerving. Possibly just Windows 10 spying on me all the time. ( I wonder if it saw me wanking about and drinking Beer last night? )

Network connection organisation in Windows.
_2a) Network connections.
A basic understanding of Network connections in modern computers is very useful when using and setting up VPN since many issues and problems are associated with these things.
The true inner workings of Microsoft Windows may in the meantime not be understood anymore by anyone. Physical connections and actual connector ports, whether physical connection or the arial/antenna for a connection such as WLAN, are all combined deep in the low level software.
An attempt is made in the control panel software to give some organisation of this in a user friendly interface, the Network Connections console, https://imgur.com/sKLn3eb
This Console is particularly difficult to find in Vista: It often does not appear in options or in lists as you try to find it in navigation.
This route will demonstrate:
Take the usual navigation route to Control Panel : https://imgur.com/RJa6fII ,
(If you don't see Control Panel listed, the link may have been disabled as part of a Start menu customization. Instead, type control in the search box at the bottom of the Start menu and then click Control Panel when it appears in the list above )
Now follow the route Network and Internet https://imgur.com/AolK1mg , followed by Network and ShareCenter , https://imgur.com/ECkx3QL
You will not see the option for Network Connections anywhere, so you will need to start typing it in the search box top right, after which the option of Network Connections will appear: https://imgur.com/2TDaFlS
Alternatively, via the search box after clicking on the Microsoft symbol bottom left, type in ncpa.cpl , https://imgur.com/i5dLdnD [FONT=Arial][size=3] [color="#3E0000"]
_2b) Make a desktop icon or , add " Network Connections " shortcut in Desktop context menu, for quick access of the Network Connections console.
You will likely frequently want to access this when, for example, first getting VPN up and running.
Because it is annoying to find in Vista , you will save yourself some time and frustration if you make a desktop icon link so as to get quickly at it.
To do this in Vista
