VBA - Count filtered rows in the table

Hi Alan, hope you are well,

so ad rem

I've a table (3 columns, can be more), and for this table I've three filters
I need count rows for each filter (filtered rows and rows left after filtering), eg.

there should be possibility resize the main table for more columns and add new tables with filters at the same time (with empty rows that will not be taken into account when counting filtered rows)

the result should be more or less like this:

is this possible to do it automatically after add/remove values to/from filter tables?
I don't need filtered table but I need result table like you can see above

Hi there :)
I am not 100% sure about this, because I have never tried to apply VBA to a filtered table.
But I just did a quick google, and I think we can do things like count the visible cells using VBA, and I also expect applying normal VBA to a filtered table will probably tell us all what is in a table.
It is usually possibly to get a VBA coding to run automatically when something or other is done to a worksheet.
And we can usually get a coding to be flexible/ dynamic and work on as many columns as are ever there at any time.

So I expect what you want could probably be done with VBA, and I expect I could probably figure out how to do it.

I probably would just need to experiment a bit as I never did anything with a filtered table. It’s usually possibly to figure out how to do most things with VBA.

If you give me a small size sample file I will take a look.

I don’t see any Excel Filters in the worksheet ( These things are what I think are Excel filters: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/filter-data-in-a-range-or-table-01832226-31b5-4568-8806-38c37dcc180e ) ?

But I can probably do the whole thing with VBA, and forget all about filters.

So for example..

Or it will tell you anything else , like you asked for, Total rows , how many left etc. etc.

there is no excel filter , it is just example

I need count rows for each filter (filtered rows and rows left after filtering),

First I filter by Fname using the whole table and this gets me some things “Filtered”. “Filtered” means this: If I filter, for example, by Fname rr then these 6 lines are removed from the table

you can test it using only the last filter with the rest left blank (don't know if it will work on xl2013)

....you can test it using only the last filter with the rest left blank (don't know if it will work on xl2013)....As far as I am aware, nothing does anything on your file if I download it as you said and then open it. But maybe I don’t know what to do to make anything happen if it has something to do with making PQ do something.
But that is not important.
I think I am closer now to understanding . ( Probably some of the problem for me was/ is that I never did anything with filters so I did not know that for example “filter by rr” or “filtered by rr” means “remove all lines in table where in column name, the name contains rr”
- It’s obvious with hindsight, but then usually everything is.)



I will have another go and post again later with it.

_ (I will always need the table, the full table, and also the filtered tables as I go along. Maybe the full table and all the others could be put in a spare third worksheet. I can get the full table from the csv file with VBA, but I expect you can get it better with PQ)

_ The table can be any size, any number of rows and columns.

_ You don’t want the full table at all. And I don’t particularly want it on the first worksheet.
I suggest
First worksheet is for filter tables
Second worksheet is Results
Third worksheet has full table and any other shit that my coding would need. (But maybe later we can do without it.**)

But you can suggest something else if you like.
I could get the coding to work on the csv file, and so the full table would never be in the Excel file, but that would be more complicated and it would also make it difficult to develop the coding and check and fix any mistakes initially.
**Maybe later when you are happy that everything is working as you want, then later I could modify the code to work only on the csv file, so then you would never see the full table or filtered tables ever in Excel

It is almost all done in memory. The temporary worksheet and all the extra shit in the Results worksheet is just for now, so that we can check that it is working and doing what you want.

So, there are two files, a csv file,

Just for now, for testing you should do this
_ download both files and put them in the same folder. They can be anywhere but just for now in the same place

I never had any problem importing text files into Excel with VBA.
Maybe it is a problem with newer Excel version? I have not much experience with newer Office versions. Microsoft seem to fuck up more and more with newer versions. I would never use any Excel much above 2010 for Excel or VBA, unless I was payed to do so.
Perhaps with PQ it is better, but most people with any sense say that Microsoft fucks everything up more and more for Excel and VBA above Office 2010.

No. Microsoft do not let us see all the VBA coding that makes Excel work.
Probably Microsoft do not want us to see it all. If we could see it all, then some people could probably steal all the coding and make their own Excel without Microsoft!

Microsoft only let us see a very very small amount in a clean file.
Mostly they let us have access to codings that do things when events, like opening, or changing things, happen. But they hide, (make invisible), their coding. But we can add our coding in those places.

The main macro I did for you I put in the Microsoft coding that works when you change something in a cell. That is why it works automatically when you change something. Not many people know how to do that. Only people like me with big cock and big brain

I think I am either 100% there in understanding what you want now, or I am very close.

I also know exactly how you want the final output. I will try to do that eventually. But if I had originally tried to do the output exactly as you wanted from the start, then

Also I think with VBA it makes a very big difference if your native language is English or not. It is very wordy , but only in English. Half the code speaks for itself. It’s very visual in a basic sort of way….
I expect that if VBA was in other languages and not just English, then the main VBA forums would not have half the traffic they do. Anyone whose native language is English should be able to pick up VBA quite quickly

As for the ' green comments, there is a couple of things you can do to get rid of them.

( Only very rarely that can give a problem because sometimes a ' is used in coding. So you might accidently lose a bit of coding. But that does not happen often. I don’t think I have any ' inside the coding I did for you. )

I would be surprised if removing comments makes a coding easier to understand. Many people just don't like having them there, often people who already know VBA and/ or the particular coding very well. But they are easy to get rid of if you don't like to see them. Just personal preference, but they are easier to get rid of

VBA cannot currently read your mind and write a code for you. But probably ChatGPT & co. will come close to doing all that, or one way or another it will get rid of most of us. Newer versions of Windows, Office, and most Microsoft will all become just something like Chat GPT and artificial intelligence. We have no long term future, other than to become self sufficient with earlier versions and have nothing to do with Microsoft and any of their software from the last 10 - 15 years

Currently you would also need yourself to download a file and open it and use it, unless you can get someone else to do that for you. I can't do that over the internet, I figured you could / would do that at least. But hey, why be dull and conventional! You don’t have to understand all of a VBA coding to use it, - most peole using a VBA macro don't understand it.

These are the main three differences, summarised.

_1) I have used the dictionary object a bit more cleverly, and so have reduced the amount of manipulation with VBA arrays. There are two reasons for this:
_ one reason is simply doing it a bit better after a few tries so far at a final coding, so in other words I just got better as I went along; but also,
_ the other reason is that in this version I omit the TemporaryWorksheet worksheet which pasted out the reduced size tables as we went along, which required an extra array to be made as I went along in order to do that extra output.

To test, then similar process to previously ,
_ download both files. They can be anywhere but both files should be in the same folder
_ open the excel workbook file only

That should result in getting the results indicated above
