If you want to do anything to do with Excel on a computer using XP , especially if you have or have ever had Office 2003, 2007 or 2010, then you will likely need to take some emergency action as soon as possible.
Microsoft gives the appearance of actively sabotaging XP operating systems through concealed updates.
Stop Updates, or they will kill you!
With older Office and Operating systems you probably have potentially a stable system. Whilst there will always be security issues of "bad things" attacking you via the internet, you are best to tackle them in some way other than in relying on updates, especially Microsoft updates. Clearly, and possibly understandably, Microsoft has no interest in supporting older software. Recent activity suggests worse: Updates are much more likely to cause problems. In the case of XP they are likely fatal.
So you are best to take steps something like this as soon as possible: it is not possible to give clear instructions, as systems vary slightly, and also the options available seem to strangely change from time to time!!! So I give a few example screen shots.
What you finally need to do is to stop the computer automatically updating.
Example steps to stop automatic updates:

_ Navigate to Control Panel

_ You need to get to Automatic updates: Navigate to Software or Program de install or similar or directly to Automatic Updates

Sometimes, a similar set of steps may be "forced upon you unexpectedly". This seems to sometimes occur, after a warning bottom right , or by the unexpected pop up. The Pop up may suddenly come up with no warning,

or you may be able to get it by various clicking on the warning symbol bottom right

From time to time you should check the above steps. It seems that occasionally the options you choose may be changed without your knowledge and "killer" updates will be installed on your computer.
The lower of the 4 options here are the safest. If in doubt , select the last

In addition you should be careful when installing any Microsoft software. Avoid all options offering any updates or any future support. Taking such options may effect or overide any update options you have previously made
