    WPA or WPA2

    WPA or WPA2
    It’s all to do with some secret coding / encryption. As time went on they got it more safer / more sophisticated,
    I expect when you send stuff across the air with the WLAN, then you want to try and prevent people tapping into you
    The older XP don’t know about the newer WPA2
    I did have a quick fiddle with various security settings on my computers, but that mostly just got me in a mess. But I did not really look at that in any great detail.

    My older router had written on the back WPA/WPA2 . The simple short term solution to my problem seemed to mainly to be changing something in the routers settings:

    The default original settings were

    This change was the main thing to cure the problem;

    I think that cured the problem, but there was still a bit to do. The error was still there. I am guessing that the earlier software simply is not expecting a 20 character string, possibly it’s expecting up to 16.
    Changing the number to 16 characters and almost immediately all was well, all XP machines are happy with the WLAN from the new FRITZ!Box router

    The XP machines are happy with that total fix. It’s as simple as this: with a 16 digit code and router set to WPA2(CCMP) then the offence taking XP wont get internet via WLAN. Change the router to WPA + WPA2 , hit the refresh , and internet springs into life.
    All other computers seem to be unaffected by switching back and forth in the router settings between WPA + WPA2 and WPA2(CCMP) .
    Switching the router from WPA + WPA2 to WPA2(CCMP) causes the internet to fail on the offending XP
